The Five-Year Engagement

Director: Nicholas Stoller
Starring: Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Rhys Ifans, Alison Brie, Chris Pratt, Kevin Hart, Chris Parnell, Mindy Kaling, Brian Posehn
Running Time: 124 minutes
Rating: R

Here comes another wedding comedy following the immense box office success of Bridesmaids. Once again from producer Judd Apatow, The Five-Year Engagement not only is fresh but also has perfect proportions of a romantic comedy with guy-friendly humor that will have you laughing one second and ?aww?ing the next.

It opens with Tom (Jason Segel) attempting to surprise his girlfriend of one year, Violet (Emily Blunt), with a proposal he had planned with his fellow sous-chef buddy, Alex (Chris Pratt). Tom and Violet are a happy couple. They met at a New Year?s Eve costume party and quickly hit it off.

Naturally, after engagement, everything takes a turn with a series of events. Although Tom and Violet had planned to be married after a year, the career-driven couple decide to postpone the wedding after Violet is offered a two-year post-doc job in Michigan. Tom sacrifices his upcoming head-chef promotion and leaves San Francisco with Violet.

More bumps come along Tom and Violet?s path, including their meddlesome colleagues, career choices, and unfortunate family deaths, to name a few. It all boils down to the question of whether Tom and Violet will ever make it.

The Five-Year Engagement hides elements of the usual clich? climax point but does so tastefully, with the help of a strong cast and fresh screenplay (co-written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller).

It is difficult not to love star and co-screenwriter Jason Segel as the supporting fianc?. His cute onscreen chemistry with Emily Blunt carries the film and pushes you to root for them. Segel is fun to watch and easy to sympathize with when his character Tom gets lost in the Michigan lifestyle and falls into depression. He is only working at a sandwich shop and befriending another pathetic local named Bill (Chris Parnell).

Blunt flawlessly delivers her portrayal of Violet, who eventually spends more and more time with her colleagues (comical personalities portrayed by Mindy Kaling of The Office, Randall Park, Kevin Hart, and Rhys Ifans), who all serve as the source of many laughs throughout. Tom?s emotional downfall and Violet?s time spent away drives a wedge between the two. Together, Segel and Blunt are dynamic and amusing as an engaged pair, never tacky.

Ending at just a little over two hours, the movie nails a steady narrative pace with fitting use of flashbacks and hits all the marks for a refreshing rom-com. Each character was cast well, but the screenplay could have been stronger if it had tilted its focus slightly more on Tom and Violet at times and less on the subplot of Alex (Pratt) and Violet?s sister, Suzie (Alison Brie).

Those who are expecting this film to be like the hit Bridesmaids may feel somewhat underwhelmed but nonetheless entertained. The Five-Year Engagement brings realistic, relatable characters to the big screen in a light-hearted whimsical story that wins you over without trying too hard and grasps your attention from the opening title.

Speech Pathologist: Correcting Your Child's Communication ...

If your child has not been showing normal signs of speech development or improvement in communication skills that are normal for his or her age, you should discuss the issue with your paediatrician at the earliest. If you are able to get the problem diagnosed early, it can be set right with the help of a qualified and experienced speech pathologist.

Undiagnosed and untreated speech disorders can lead to emotionally and socially crippling breakdown of communication skills that extends well into adulthood. One in every 7 Australians is said to be battling a communication disability. More than half a million school going children in Australia have difficulty in understanding and using language effectively and a number just slightly less than that show signs of delayed speech.

You might have already been told that your child might benefit with some sessions with a speech therapist or pathologist. So what exactly does a speech pathologist do? A textbook definition would describe him or her as one who is trained to assess the level of communication disability and treat it effectively using various proven methods.

Effective communication involves 5 important aspects: speech, writing, reading, sign language, gestures and symbols. You can say that your child is able to communicate effectively if the child is able to understand and is understood by others. If your child shows any of the following signs of difficulty in communication, you might have to consult a speech pathologist:

? Is unable to speak clearly and struggles to find the right words

? Does not understand language and gets distracted easily

? Has trouble with his voice and cannot be heard at times

? Is unable to hear clearly

? Does not show any interest in reading or writing and is unable to comprehend written sentences

? Withdraws from company and shows no interest in making new acquaintances

? Shows signs of aggression caused by frustration

? Needs directions to be issued repeatedly

Speech pathologists are normally associated with childcare centres, primary schools, hospitals and nursing homes, universities, rehabilitation and community health centres, metal health organisations, and in private clinics. Their expertise extends to treating communication disabilities caused by more complex issues like cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, and autism.

Depending on your child?s needs, the speech pathologist may recommend individual or home based sessions, small group sessions, or even classroom sessions. To gain a preliminary idea of whether your child is just naturally slow in learning or if there is some other serious underlying problem, get a timeline chart from your paediatrician explaining the normal levels of development at different ages.

The key to getting your child?s development back on track lies in working closely with the speech pathologist and the paediatrician and ensuring that whatever exercises are assigned to the child, are carried out regularly at home. More importantly, remember to be extremely patient with your child and provide him or her with a supportive home that is filled with love and laughter.

Luchito Ruiz writes informative articles whenever he can get time off from his work as a massage therapist. If you would like to get more information on speech pathologists and communication difficulties, visit Speech Pathologist Melbourne.

Occupy activists fear becoming Democratic 'pet'

Occupy Wall Street protesters are planning coast-to-coast demonstrations Tuesday in honor of "May Day" or International Workers' Day. The protesters are calling for a general strike and are encouraging workers to stay home. The Morning Joe panel discusses.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

As Occupy protesters hit the streets for a nationwide general strike on Tuesday, some in the movement fear the emergence of two new activist outfits made up of "old left" advocacy groups and unions is an attempt to turn them into a "pet" for the Democratic Party and President Obama?s reelection effort.

The new groups, 99% Power and 99% Spring, include backers such as MoveOn.org, Rebuild The Dream, AFL-CIO, United Auto Workers, CODEPINK: Women for Peace, and The Ruckus Society. The groups bring money with them ? something in short supply for Occupy ? but their efforts are being eyed warily by those who helped launch the Occupy movement.

Adbusters, the Canadian magazine that made the initial call for people to Occupy Wall Street on Sept. 17 of last year, has been running a blog series on their website, "Battle for the Soul of Occupy," in the last few weeks. In it, the publication has decried attempts to "neutralize our insurgency with an insidious campaign of donor money and co-optation."

"This counter-strategy worked to kill off the Tea Party?s outrage and turn it into a puppet of the Republican Party. Will the same happen with Occupy Wall Street? Will our insurgency turn into the Democrats? Tea Party pet?" Adbusters wrote in an April 12 post. "Will you allow Occupy to become a project of the old left, the same cabal of old world thinkers who have blunted the possibility of revolution for decades? Will you allow MoveOn, The Nation and Ben & Jerry to put the brakes on our Spring Offensive and turn our struggle into a ?99% Spring? reelection campaign for President Obama?"

Skepticism of electoral politics runs deep in the Occupy movement and it could affect the ability of Democrats to mobilize activists during the 2012 campaign, despite attempts to appropriate the "99 percent" rhetoric. But Todd Gitlin, a former leader of the 1960s group, Students for a Democratic Society, who has just published a book on Occupy, believes the concerns of some in the movement are "outlandish."

Protesters hit the streets for May Day rallies

"It was inevitable that there would arise political actors that want those same reforms, although they don?t necessarily share the real-time spirit of the movement. These are the membership organizations, like the unions and MoveOn ? who did turn out for the big marches in October and November, and who are numerically very large but were always from the beginning being met with suspicion on the part of the Occupy movement," said Gitlin, a professor of sociology and journalism at Columbia University.

"This represents actually a misunderstanding on the part of some of the Occupy people who feel weak, so they?re afraid of co-optation because they feel that the co-opters have the power to puncture their balloon," he added.

Still, the new groups don?t sit well with Charles M. Young, a writer at thiscantbehappening.net and a 1960s-era activist. He attended one of the mid-April training sessions held by The 99% Spring on Manhattan?s Upper West Side, which he said was led by representatives of the Democratic Party and Wall Street lawyers, and where Obama buttons were offered for sale.

Up host Chris Hayes leads the conversation on civil disobedience in light of the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the groups that are emerging to teach protesters non-violent demonstration tactics.

Young, 61, feared that Occupy could be "pulled to the right" by partnering up with them and felt the effort was part of a bid to keep the "Kucinich Democrats" from leaving.

"It looks very much like what they call an AstroTurf movement, you know, something from the top down," he said, noting he left the meeting "disillusioned." "I don?t remember anybody saying that there was a need for the 99% Spring before it came out."

"It does seem to be mostly the Democratic Party trying to keep the left in line for Obama and keeping things obedient, and that?s just not enough given the issues involved," he added.

In an email statement, Justin Ruben, MoveOn's executive director, said his group has electoral goals, but that his organization has "zero interest in trying to alter [Occupy] in any way."

"Growing economic inequality and the increasing influence of 1 percent cash in our political system are huge problems, and problems that MoveOn members care deeply about. Our response includes working to engage more activists in the fight for fairness for the 99 percent and to introduce activists to powerful tactics like non-violent direct action. That's what the 99% Spring is about," he said.

"Regarding elections, yes, there's no question that MoveOn sees elections as profoundly important, and we will be engaged in elections this year -- just as we've engaged in elections since our inception in 1998. But of course we work with lots of allies that don't engage in elections, and we respect that choice," he added.

Dorian Warren, an assistant professor of political science at Columbia University, said schisms on the left today are similar to those during the civil rights movements. There were "intense fights between the old guard" groups like the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the youth-led Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he said. In hindsight, the youth-led group played an important role, serving as "the left flank of the movement," he said. "That?s sort of the role Occupy is playing."

But Occupy should be skeptical and challenge the progressive establishment, he said. "Until September, the strategies of these groups, whether it was ?inside the Beltway? game or just traditional interest group politics, that was not working, and so the more radical tactics that Occupy innovated is what shifted the political terrain and they should stay focused on doing that."

The 99% Spring and 99% Power have given a nod to Occupy for leading the way, though they also said they had been drafting plans to engage in more public protest and focus on corporate accountability before Occupy existed. They had targeted the fall for their campaign, but then Occupy took off, which in turn helped them convince others of the viability of their own strategy, said George Goehl, executive director of National People?s Action.

Occupy reinvented: '99 percent' protesters target General Electric

"It opened up some space for some of the things that we?ve been working on for a long time, and it was really just kind of liberating ? in terms of what was possible and also in terms of kind of confirming what we thought," he said.

Goehl said members of Occupy have joined his group?s trainings ? or led them ? and some consider themselves as part of 99% Power. He said when he was in Des Moines last week at a protest, three of the 12 people arrested were from Occupy.

"I think what we?re seeing is ? a growing number of threads that do speak to the need to be fearless truth tellers around what?s truly going on in this country to both engage in nonviolent direct action and to challenge the dominance of the corporate sector both, you know, in our economy and in our politics," he said. "And I think that, you know, Occupy is a thread of that, 99% Spring is a thread of that, 99% Power ? it?s all part of the same thing."

He said that the notion that any electoral objectives were part of their strategy was "completely false."

"The organizations that actually started this idea don?t really run big electoral programs. It?s not been that kind of the focus in terms of strategies and tactics," he added.

In the end, Warren, the politics professor, said he thought there could be "too much focus on who?s co-opting Occupy versus Occupy just doing its work."

Success during big events like Tuesday?s May Day actions will actually depend on how many people that the unions, MoveOn and other groups turn out, Warren said. "In that sense, Occupy?s fate is linked to these other groups and these others groups? fates are linked to Occupy."

Escaped China activist in U.S. protection: rights group

BEIJING (Reuters) - Blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng is under U.S. protection in Beijing after an audacious escape from 19 months under house arrest, a U.S.-based group said on Saturday, in a drama that threatens to ignite new tensions between the two governments.

The United States has not confirmed publicly reports that Chen, who slipped away from under the noses of guards and eyes and ears of surveillance equipment around his village home in eastern Shandong province, fled into the U.S. embassy.

China has also declined direct public comment on Chen's reported escape, which threatens to overshadow a two-day meeting with top Obama administration officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in Beijing from Thursday.

But Texas-based ChinaAid said it "learned from a source close to the Chen Guangcheng situation that Chen is under U.S. protection and high level talks are currently under way between U.S. and Chinese officials regarding Chen's status."

"Because of Chen's wide popularity, the Obama Administration must stand firmly with him or risk losing credibility as a defender of freedom and the rule of law," Bob Fu, president of the religious and political rights advocacy group that has long campaigned for Chen's freedom, said in an email.

The standoff carries political risk for President Barack Obama, whose presumptive Republican challenger in November's election, Mitt Romney, has painted Obama as weak on China.

"The Obama Administration will be inviting attack from the Romney campaign ... if the right course is not decided immediately," said Michael Pillsbury, a former senior official in the previous three Republican administrations.

The reports of Chen's escape come nearly three months after a Chinese official, Wang Lijun, fled into a U.S. consulate for over 24 hours on February 6, unleashing a scandal that rattled the ruling Communist Party a few months before it is to head into a once-in-a-decade leadership handover.

Wang's brief flight to the U.S. consulate led to the downfall of top official Bo Xilai who had been openly campaigning for a place in the inner circle of power in Beijing. Wang was taken into custody by central government authorities when he left the consulate.

Pu Zhiqiang, a Beijing lawyer and rights advocate, said reliable contacts also told him that Chen took refuge in U.S. embassy grounds. The incident will be another damaging blot on China's security services, following Wang's flight, said Pu.

"Everyone knew about the suffering of Chen Guangcheng and his family but nobody dared raised his head over this and ignored it," he told Reuters, referring to Chinese officials.

"Chen Guangcheng has been the most typical victim of this lawless, boundless exercise of power," said Pu. "But the day has finally come when he has escaped from it."

Chen, a self-schooled legal advocate who campaigned against abortions forced under China's "one child" policy, had been held under extra-legal confinement in his village home in Linyi since September 2010 when he was released from jail.

His confinement with his family under relentless surveillance fanned protests by Chinese sympathizers and criticism from foreign governments and groups.

Chen's escape and the furor it has unleashed could add to the headaches of China's ruling Communist Party, which is striving to ensure stability and authority before the leadership transition later this year.

It also threatens to overshadow a visit by Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who are due in Beijing next week for the annual high-level talks between the two countries.

Asked whether any issue could force the meeting to be canceled or postponed, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said, "I don't know why you'd ask the question."

Cui told a news conference he had "no information" on Chen.

A U.S. State Department source said on Saturday there was no change to plans for Clinton and Geithner to attend the May 3-4 Strategic & Economic Dialogue consultations.

"We're going," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It was unclear whether the two countries might find a way to defuse the situation - either quickly so as to avoid disrupting the talks or over the longer term - but current and former U.S. officials said they thought China was likely to want to find some kind of resolution rather than jeopardize the relationship.

"I can't imagine they will tank the relationship. This isn't the same as a spy plane incident or Tiananmen Square. I do think they will try to manage it," said a senior Obama administration official who spoke on condition that he not be identified.

ChinaAid's Fu told Reuters that Chen's flight was not timed to take advantage of the high-level diplomacy.

"There's really no calculation. He was totally cut off from the outside world and has been preparing for this moment for months," he said by telephone from Texas.

"Chen's first wish is that he can be guaranteed freedom just like normal Chinese citizens in China. To be exiled is not his first choice," added Fu.

U.S. economic analysts who follow China voiced conflicting views on the potential of Chen's standoff to disrupt bilateral ties - and by extension the world economy.

Bonnie Baha, portfolio manager at the $32 billion DoubleLine Capital, said "the timing couldn't be worse" with the Clinton trip and with Beijing "already embarrassed over the Bo Xilai scandal."

"Given the state of the world's economy and the level of economic interdependence which currently exists this certainly has the potential to roil world markets," she said.

But David Hale, an economist based in Chicago and veteran China watcher, said he saw "nothing new in this and (it) will continue so long as China remains an authoritarian country."

"I do not think this will have a major impact on the markets. The Obama administration will try to manage this in a low-key way," he said.

Hu Jia, a Beijing dissident who met Chen several days ago in Beijing, recounted that Chen said he would not seek asylum from within the U.S. embassy.

"If they catch him, there will be unprecedented retaliation against him. So in the end we decided there was only one place that could guarantee his safety," Hu said, referring to the embassy.

"Before making a decision to go there, he said he wanted to stay and fight, and not request asylum," added Hu.

Later Saturday, Hu was escorted away by a group of police, according to his wife Zeng Jinyan. More police were likely to come to take her away as well, she said.

"The situation is very complicated. The police are outside right now," Zeng said in a strained voice before ending the conversation.

Fu said Chen's wife, mother and daughter are "still under tight house arrest," while his older brother, Chen Guangfu, and nephew have been arrested and other relatives and neighbors were taken away for questioning.

Washington and other Western governments have criticized Beijing's jailing and confinement of dissidents, protesters and other citizens who challenge Communist Party power. China says such criticism is unwelcome meddling in domestic affairs.

SENSITIVE MOMENT

Two prominent Chen supporters, friend He Peirong and Beijing researcher Guo Yushan, were out of contact on Saturday. Fu said He was detained on Friday morning in the city of Nanjing but was unaware of Guo's fate.

"I was actually talking to her and the last words she said were 'the PSB has arrived,'" Fu said, referring to the Public Security Bureau.

There was no sign of any greater than normal security around the U.S. embassy, a fort-like compound of concrete and steel in northeast Beijing.

If Chen is sheltering inside, that could thrust Washington into the midst volatile leadership politics in China, recalling the case of dissident astrophysicist Fang Lizhi. He hid inside the U.S. ambassador's resident with his wife after the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, to Beijing's outrage.

Fang settled in the United States and died recently.

Officials in Shandong said on Saturday they had no comment on Chen's escape. State media has made no mention of the saga.

"It is the Shandong government that has bungled this by turning a small matter into an international affair," said Li Datong, a former editor at the China Youth Daily, a party paper, who was pushed aside for denouncing censorship. "It is certainly a loss of face for the central government."

Economics professor Michele Boldrin of Washington University in St. Louis said the security lapse that allowed Chen to escape likely would make China loathe to complain too loudly.

"I expect the Chinese government to follow the usual procedure: complain loudly, use strong words for the internal propaganda and then eventually get down to business when it is time to do business," said Boldrin, a research fellow at the Federal Reserve of St. Louis.

Fighting oppression worldwide is a trait exclusive to Americans. To hate the cause and love the fight will be the call toward civil war at home. The left seems too ensconced to even suspect that some of us are the knock down, drag out, barroom brawlers that they see in movies. That we have already made preparations to outflank them at every turn. Or that I will lie, cheat, steal and whatever is necessary to ensure small victories to embolden the silent populace to rise to the occasion toward the final onslaught on the protagonists machine of malevolence.

Yes he was correct. When Truman refused to open the war up to the Chinese mainland he left a festering wound that hasn?t healed in over half a century.

How annoying are you on Twitter? A new site will tell you

    3 hrs.

There are plenty of websites ? such as Klout ??which will rate how great people are on social networks.?Finally, there's also?one which will explain just how annoying they can be. You should probably check how it rates you, before your friends get there.?

The site's name is a play on Klout and a somewhat ruder term. Let's just call it "K-Bag," and link to it right here.

What the site does, after you enter a Twitter user name, is?measure how annoying that person is on that particular social network. It does this by?checking for tweets containing profanity, frequent retweets, check-ins from services such as Foursquare, and abuse of the English language.?

A numeric score will be produced based on those criteria, accompanied by a verdict, but the number and sentiment don't necessarily follow. I got an 8 and am "a nice person." My boss got a 14 and is "quite a nice person." Meanwhile,?Justin Bieber got a 50 and is, in fact, "a bit of a d-bag."

I realize the whole thing isn't exactly super scientific, but it's still great to have some sort of statistic instead of just whining about how much of an annoying jerk someone is on Twitter. And who knows, you may find out that someone you thought was a jerk is actually "mostly alright." You dodged a bullet there, Kanye.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts, or circling her?on?Google+.
